![]() Not a bad story, but it didn't quite scratch my itch. I guess I was expected something different and I felt like a got more of a hodgepodge. They were okay together, I guess, but I just didn't totally feel them as a couple. I thought he was spunky and cute, but I didn't really love Alun, whose personality never really snapped into place for me. One plot melds into the next and there is a thing with brothers and family and loyalty and jealousy. ![]() I know, I know, it's only 280-some odd pages, but it felt like a 400+ page story. There is a LOT happening in this story, and the story is LONG. The resolution with the whole beauty-vs-beast aspect happened pretty early on, so the rest of the book took me a bit by surprise. We didn't get a good sense of what Alun looks like in beast-mode (large head and prominent brow ridges was as much as I gleaned), and the attraction between David and Alun was practically there from the start, despite Alun's looks. However, that isn't really what this story is about. I mean, I expected it to be more or less a play on Beauty and the Beast. Alun Kendrick, despite his looks and surly demeanor. ![]() I thought that the majority of the book was going to be David learning to love "the beast," Dr. ![]() ![]() Don't get me wrong, it's cute, but it wasn't exactly what I thought I was getting. Okay, I seem to be in the minority here, but this book was a bit hard for me to finish. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments The fault in our stars hardcover![]() ![]() The various turns that Hazel and Augustus go through, the tragic moments, the funny moments and the times when the readers are left teary eyed, is what makes this book worth a read. ![]() This is a book that has it all be it love, emotion, drama, humour, pain, fear and even death.Īs the book progresses, the readers are unwittingly brought into the lives of the characters and start feeling and thinking about them as one of their own. To observe your mind in automatic mode, glance at the image below. Last month, Kahneman highlighted in a lecture given at the National Academy of Sciences "The Science of Science Communication" conference how realizing the limitations of each system can help us catch our own mistakes. ( Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Understanding how we think can also guide more personal decisions. For example, a commentary in the March issue of the journal Nature Climate Change outlined how carbon labeling that appeals to both systems could be more successful than previous efforts to change consumer habits. Understanding fast and slow thinking could help us find more rational solutions to problems that we as a society face. The following excerpt is the first chapter, entitled "The Characters of the Story," which introduces readers to these systems. These two systems that the brain uses to process information are the focus of Nobelist Daniel Kahneman's new book, Thinking, Fast and Slow (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC., 2011). That automatic mode of thinking, not under voluntary control, contrasts with the need to slow down and deliberately fiddle with pencil and paper when working through an algebra problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() To survive physically or psychologically, we sometimes need to react automatically to a speeding taxi as we step off the curb or to the subtle facial cues of an angry boss. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments John dewey democracy![]() ![]() Education promotes higher human values, and the freedom engendered by democracy safeguards the continued existence of such enlightened values. The ideal form of social system that can be envisaged in the cause of education is of course a full-fledged democracy, in the true sense of the word. Now this idea cannot be applied to all the members of a society except… where there is adequate provision for the reconstruction of social habits and institutions by means of wide stimulation arising from equitably distributed interests. “The object and reward of learning is continued capacity for growth,” asserts John Dewey. Education implies continuous growth and mental development throughout one’s life, both before and after the normal school and university phase. Education, of course, is not to be associated with merely the formal academic part of education. ![]() |
